This study aims to reflect on the expressions of politeness - typical of the Portuguese language - and how they are perceived and acquired by non-native speakers. It was also important to understand how linguistic distance (familiarity/strangeness) can influence language learning, specifically with regards to ways of addressing people, vocabulary acquisition influenced by false friends and ways of politeness. With the information gleaned from this study, the aim is to develop a reflection on the strategies to be adopted by the teacher as a mediator of these differences or similarities and how to use this reflection to benefit the learning in Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PLNM).
